Besides the services we offer, there are also things you need to take care of yourself when moving to the Netherlands. Below, we discuss the most important points:
1. Registering with a municipality
As soon as you arrive in the Netherlands, you need to register with the municipality where you will be living. This is essential to be officially registered in the population register (BRP). You can find more information and make arrangements through the Central Government.
2. Take out health insurance
Everyone living in the Netherlands is obliged to take out Dutch health insurance. You have three months after arrival to do so. More information on choosing a health insurer and your obligations can be found on the Central Government website.
3. Taking care of your banking affairs
When you move to the Netherlands, you will need a Dutch bank account to pay your rent and fixed expenses, for example. You can make an appointment for this at a bank of your choice, such as ING, ABN AMRO or Rabobank. Make sure you bring a valid identity document and your BSN number (obtained after registering with the municipality).
4. Taxes and benefits
Depending on your situation, you will also have to take taxes and possible benefits into account. For an overview of which taxes apply and how to apply for benefits, please visit the website of the Tax Administration.
Although we at Gebr. Van Den Eijnden will take care of many logistical and administrative tasks for you, there are some things you will have to arrange yourself. However, with our support, your move to the Netherlands will be a lot easier!
If you are planning to move back to the Netherlands, there are a number of important issues involved. Remigrating can be a complex process, and it is essential to be well-prepared. Besides organising your move, there are also practical and administrative matters to consider. Below, we discuss the most important points to arrange when moving back to the Netherlands.
1. Registering in the Key Register of Persons (BRP)
As soon as you live in the Netherlands again, you have to register with the municipality where you reside. You do this in the Basic Registration of Persons (BRP). Registration is crucial to obtain your citizen service number (BSN), which gives you access to important services such as healthcare and tax matters. More information on the registration procedure can be found on the central government website.
2. Reactivating your health insurance
When emigrating back to the Netherlands, you are obliged to take out Dutch healthcare insurance within four months of your remigration. If you have lived in the Netherlands before, you will have to reactivate your old health insurance or choose a new one. Check carefully which insurance best suits your personal situation. For more information, please visit the website of the Central Government.
3. Opening or reactivating a bank account
It is useful to get your banking in order quickly. If you still have a Dutch bank account from before you emigrated, you can often easily reactivate it. Don’t have a Dutch account yet? Then you can open a new one at one of the Dutch banks such as ING, Rabobank or ABN AMRO. Make sure you have a valid ID and your BSN number to hand.
4. Tax matters and benefits
When moving back to the Netherlands, your tax position may change. Consider updating your tax details with the Dutch Tax Administration, especially if you received income abroad. It is also important to check whether you are eligible for benefits such as rent or healthcare benefits. You can find all the information you need on the website of the Tax Administration.
5. Importing removal goods
When you take your household goods with you when you remigrate, you need to take into account customs regulations. You can often import goods tax-free, provided they have been in your possession for at least six months. We at Gebr. Van Den Eijnden will help you arrange the correct import documents so that this goes smoothly. Make sure you fill in the right forms and apply for any duty-free import permits.
6. Housing and accommodation
Of course, when moving back to the Netherlands, you will also need to arrange suitable housing. Whether you are staying with family temporarily or looking for a rental or owner-occupied house straight away, it is smart to arrange this well in advance. This can often be done through Dutch rental platforms or housing associations. Keep in mind possible waiting times for rental properties.
The process of moving back to the Netherlands can be challenging, but with the right preparation and support from, for example, a specialised moving company like Gebr. Van Den Eijnden, the transition will be a lot easier.
The cost of moving (back) to the Netherlands can vary greatly, as every move is tailor-made. There are several factors that affect the total cost of your move. It is important to consider these when planning your remigration.
